Rio 2016 Olympic Games

Women’s Marathon

Sharon Van Rouwendaal became the first Dutch winner of the marathon today, Copacabana painted orange by fans from The Netherlands , flags and clogs flying as she came home in 1 hour 56mins 32.1sec. That marked the first Dutch swimming gold of these Games, Van Rouwendaal joining compatriot Maarten van der Weijden, 2008 winner if the inaugural 10km event, in the club of Olympic marathon champions from their country.

Van Rouwendal looked as though she would be joined on the podium by Narbonne training partner Aurelie Muller (FRA), coach Philippe Lucas‘ second charge in the race on 1:56:48.7, the bronze to Rachel Bruni (ITA), on 1:56:49.5.

Then came news that Muller was disqualified (first take is that there was a collision with Bruni in the rush for the finish shoot – but that is not official nor confirmed), leaving Brazil celebrating bronze for Poliana Okimoto in 1:56:51.4. She is the Spanish physiotherapist who worked on Mireia Belmonte‘s  poorly shoulders and helped Spain’s top aquatic asset soar to gold in the 200m butterfly and bronze in the 400m medley in the pool last week.

Belmonte’s coach Fred Vergnoux recommended that fellow Frenchman Lucas turn to Solana for help repairing a right shoulder injury that had dogged Van Rouwendaal for eight months. It took Solana a month of treatment to fix the problem.

Van Rouwendal was delighted and noted:

“I felt so good, I swam so easy, I didn’t feel any fatigue, so after 6km, I changed my mind and thought I should push on. I kicked hard for about 200m and looked back to see that I’d opened a gap. From there I just used my arms and paced the race. I didn’t feel any fatigue until the very end.”

“I knew the last 100m I could finish strong but I don’t like the feeling of being in front. Then in the last 10m it was like, ‘Yay!’ “

On the win, she said: “It’s an amazing feeling because it’s not been a great year for me. I’ve …
