Chatwood’s back issues put next start in doubt

PHILADELPHIA — A back injury that flared up again during a 7-6 Rockies loss to the Phillies on Sunday afternoon could threaten right-hander Tyler Chatwood’s next start.

Chatwood missed two starts in late June with a back strain and had been pitching through tightness that he called “manageable.” But because of Sunday’s issues, Chatwood said he won’t know if he’ll make his next start until after being examined Monday in Denver.

He experienced spasms during Sunday’s first inning, and an ill-advised jump throw on a fielding play in the third (for an error) didn’t help. Chatwood, who entered with a 1.30 road ERA, gave up six runs (four earned) and six hits, and walked five, in four-plus innings.

Head athletic trainer Keith Dugger visited the mound, and Chatwood threw an allotted warmup pitch to test his health, during the fifth, but the back didn’t improve.
