LA’s McCarthy says he’s heading back to DL

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers again defied conventional wisdom about starting pitching Saturday when Brandon McCarthy couldn’t get out of the second inning, said he’ll be going on the disabled list, and they won anyway.

Once a master of command and control, McCarthy walked five for the third consecutive start and hit a batter in the Dodgers’ 8-4 win over the Pirates. When manager Dave Roberts went to get McCarthy he brought a trainer, and the club later announced the pitcher had previously undisclosed right hip stiffness.

“Obviously,” said Roberts, “something wasn’t right. You see the frustration. He feels like he’s letting the team down. I feel for him and his teammates feel for him. We’ve got to get him right and get him back.”

McCarthy is seven starts into his comeback from Tommy John elbow surgery. The delicate synch between body and mind is hard enough to maintain without another physical issue leading to a sudden and inexplicable inability to throw a pitch at a target.
