Nats release Papelbon, recall Lopez

WASHINGTON — The Nationals released right-handed pitcher Jonathan Papelbon and recalled righty Reynaldo Lopez from Triple-A Syracuse. Lopez will start Saturday’s game against the Braves. Nationals president of baseball operations and general manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.
After the Nationals’ 8-5 loss to the Braves on Friday, Papelbon was saying goodbye to teammates and had some of his bags packed.
Papelbon, 35, was 2-4 with a 4.37 ERA and 19 saves for the Nationals this season. But his struggles nearing the non-waiver Trade Deadline forced Washington to acquire …
