On the first day of this series in Pallekele, Sri Lanka went to lunch in tatters at 84 for 5. They recovered, but it took a couple of days. On the first day of this Test in Colombo, Sri Lanka went to lunch in even greater trouble at 55 for 5. This time, their recovery took only a couple of hours. At least, a recovery of sorts, for at 141 for 5 they were far from total safety. But Dhananjaya de Silva and Dinesh Chandimal had done the hard bit.
During the morning session, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon demolished the Sri Lanka top order to such a degree that by the 17th over they were 26 for 5. Sri Lanka’s all-time lowest Test total of 71, scored against Pakistan in Kandy in 1994, appeared to be in danger. Yet by tea, de Silva was on 74, Chandimal on 37, the partnership had reached 115, and it was a whole new game. On a dry pitch in hot conditions, every run was valuable.
