Arrieta’s sharp outing reminds Maddon of ’15

CHICAGO — After the All-Star break last season, Jake Arrieta had an incredible run, posting a 12-1 record and 0.75 ERA in 15 starts. It helped him win the National League Cy Young Award. On Friday against the Cardinals, Cubs manager Joe Maddon saw that same Arrieta again.
Arrieta won his 14th game of the season in Chicago’s 13-2 romp at Wrigley Field, giving up one run over 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander would’ve gone deeper into the game, but two uncharacteristic errors shortened his outing.
“You look at the numbers, and they’re outstanding again,” Maddon said of Arrieta, who has a 2.55 ERA. “You become more hyper-critical after a guy’s achieved what he did last year, and what he achieved last year and how he did it is almost impossible to replicate. That was wire-to-wire incredible.”
Arrieta struck out six and scattered four hits on Friday, but what Maddon liked was how the right-hander looked.
