Cards exploring options after Holliday’s injury

CHICAGO — Matt Holliday will return to St. Louis on Monday for a follow-up visit with the Cardinals’ hand specialist, Dr. Charles Goldfarb, to determine what course of action he’ll take to heal from a fractured right thumb.
Goldfarb, who happened to be in Chicago on Friday for another purpose, reviewed Holliday’s X-rays and confirmed that Holliday sustained a fracture when he was hit by a 94-mph fastball on Thursday. He’ll visit with Holliday again next week before recommending how the veteran outfielder moves forward. Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said surgery could be an option.
