USA end Olympic boxing drought

Nico Hernandez has secured America’s first Olympic boxing medal since 2008.
The light-flyweight is guaranteed a bronze in Rio after progressing to the semi-finals of the 46-49kg event with victory over Ecuador’s Carlos Eduardo Quipo Palaxti on Wednesday.
Hernandez, from Wichita, Kansas, lost the first round on all three judges’ cards but battled back to win 29-28 across the board.
The 20-year-old will take on Uzbekistan’s Hasanboy Dusmatov in the semi-finals on Friday but is already confirmed as America’s first Olympic boxing medallist since Deontay Wilder won heavyweight bronze in Beijing.
