USA, Russia, Brazil make women’s volleyball quarterfinals at Rio 2016

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 11, 2016 – With varying degrees of difficulty, USA, Russia and Brazil all secured tickets to the quartefinals of women’s volleyball at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, after the completion of round 3 in pool play. With two pool matches to spare the three teams remain undefeated and cannot be overtaken by the bottom two teams of their respective pools.Hosts and defending champions Brazil plus reigning European champions Russia top Pool A on 3-0 records, after scoring straight-set wins on Day 3.Brazil closed the day before yet another wild sellout crowd at the Maracanazinho, exhibiting an impressive show of power, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-22) over Japan. Russia got the better of a plucky Cameroon who actually outblocked the European side before falling 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-23).Previously, Korea had swept Argentina 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-23) to stay on track for their own ticket to the quaterfinals.In Pool B USA are the only undfeated team, after an excellent performance that saw them beat Serbia 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19).In other Pool B action, The Netherlands handed Italy their third defeat in a row, downing the Azzure 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-20), while China shut out Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, …
