A-Rod to start Thursday despite new Sox pitcher

BOSTON — The moment that John Farrell announced on Wednesday that knuckleballing right-hander Steven Wright had been scratched from his Thursday start against the Yankees, many began to speculate whether New York designated hitter Alex Rodriguez would still start.
On Tuesday, Yankees manager Joe Girardi announced that the slugger, who will play his final game on Friday, would start on Thursday specifically because of the matchup against Wright.
When asked before Wednesday’s game if A-Rod would still be in the starting lineup against left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez, Girardi quickly squashed any doubt with three words: “Yes, he will.”
