First-inning runs carry Marlins to victory

MIAMI — Giancarlo Stanton flexed his strength on a shattered-bat double and that was all Tom Koehler needed to lead the Marlins to a 2-0 series-tying win over the Giants on Tuesday night at Marlins Park.
With the win, the Marlins took a half-game lead over the Cardinals for the second National League Wild Card spot, with St. Louis still playing the Reds as Miami’s game ended. The Giants loosened their grip on their NL West lead and now sit a half-game ahead of the Dodgers, pending the result of Los Angeles’ game vs. the Phillies on Tuesday night.
Koehler stifled San Francisco, limiting it to two hits over seven innings. The reliable right-hander improved to 4-0 against NL West teams this season and has allowed two earned runs over his last 27 innings.
Matt Moore may still be winless in two starts with the Giants, but he pitched well following a couple of first-inning runs. Stanton fisted his double with an exit velocity of 95.7 mph, according to Statcast™, to open the …
