ST. LOUIS — Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was named to seven consecutive All-Star teams prior to this season. He has won eight straight Gold Glove Awards and has led the National League in caught-stealing percentage four times since 2005, when no other catcher has topped the list more than twice in that time frame.
He seemingly didn’t have a kryptonite for his first eight years in the Major Leagues, until Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton ran onto the scene in 2013. Hamilton entered Tuesday 17-for-19 in stolen-base attempts against Molina, the most by any baserunner against him.
“Billy is doing a really good job of getting good jumps and taking advantage of what’s there,” Reds manager Bryan Price said. “With a catcher of that caliber, you’ve got to make your decision if you’re stealing the base off the pitcher, because you’re certainly not stealing it off the catcher.”
