Esky out of leadoff spot, Orlando in for Royals

KANSAS CITY — For most of the last two years, Alcides Escobar has been in the leadoff spot for the Royals. Entering Tuesday, the shortstop had started 213 out of 273 regular-season games in 2015 and ’16 as the leadoff man.
And while Escobar hasn’t always been the most productive hitter in that spot, for one reason or another there have been stretches of team success coinciding along with his position in the lineup. The trend has become known to the Royals faithful as #EskyMagic.
However, as the Royals continue looking to find ways to jumpstart an offense that had scored more than four runs in a game just four times since the All-Star break entering the series opener against the White Sox, there’s been a change. Outfielder Paulo Orlando, who had not batted higher than third in the order this season, was atop the lineup.
“We’ve been thinking about it for a while,” manager Ned Yost said. “Paulo [has] been swinging the bat good, but we were waiting … to get a little more offense out of the middle of our lineup.”
