Having survived the Jamaica Test, West Indies mounted a fresh challenge against an unsteady Indian batting line-up, taking three wickets in the first session. KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane, though, steadied India with a 58-run partnership after they had been reduced to 19 for 2 in the sixth over. That second wicket was that of Virat Kohli to debutant Alzarri Joseph, a promotion and selection that betrayed perhaps India’s frustration at their slow scoring in the previous Test. About 18 minutes before lunch, Rahul fell to a soft dismissal, which arguably comes with the territory when you play an attacking innings of 50 off 65.
While two of India’s three changes were in the bowling department – Ravindra Jadeja and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in for Amit Mishra and Umesh Yadav – the batting selections were instructive. M Vijay, who was fit after missing Jamaica, and Cheteshwar Pujara were left out. At the toss, Kohli, who would have batted if he had won the toss anyway, emphasised that Rohit Sharma, Pujara’s replacement, can change a match in a session.
