Guerra’s DL stint precautionary; Peralta recalled

MILWAUKEE — The Brewers have placed starter Junior Guerra on the 15-day DL with right elbow inflammation in the midst of his impressive rookie campaign. Opening Day starter Wily Peralta has been recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs, manager Craig Counsell announced prior to Monday’s 4-3, 12-inning loss against the Braves at Miller Park.
Guerra experienced inflammation in his throwing elbow the day after his most recent outing on Aug. 3 in San Diego. There is no timetable on the 31-year-old’s return, though the Brewers remain optimistic that his stint on the DL could go no more than the minimum 15 days required.
“It’s a precaution,” Guerra said through translator Carlos Brizuela. “That’s why the trainers wanted to just take it slow. They don’t want it to get any worse than it is. It should be good in less than two weeks, really.”
This campaign has been a breakthrough season for the journeyman Guerra. Claimed off waivers from the White Sox during the offseason, he owns a 2.93 ERA and 3.64 FIP over 17 starts and 107 1/3 innings. Guerra’s ERA ranks first among National League rookies and his 2.2 WAR, according to Fangraphs, is tied for third among all rookie pitchers.
