USA and China hoping to take control of pool C

Rio de Janeiro, August 8, 2016 – April Ross/Kerri Walsh Jennings of the United States are vying to take control of pool C as they battle China’s Fan Wang/Yuan Yue in the final match of day three.  Both teams won their opening match, and the winner will almost be assured of advancing to the elimination stage.

Head to Head

April Ross/Kerri Walsh Jennings have won three out of the four meetings on the FIVB World Tour.  The Americans won the first two meetings, both at the season-opening event in Fuzhou, a quarterfinal match in 2014, 21-17 and 21-18 and the bronze medal match in 2015, 13-21, 21-13, and 15-11 in 47 minutes.  The Chinese got revent in the World Championships in July, 2015 by winning a round of 16 match, 21-19, 17-21, and 15-13 in 56 minutes.  Ross/Walsh Jennings won the only meeting in 2016 at the Xiamen open in April, 21-12 and 21-15 in pool play.

Historically the #3 seed has won all three matches against the #15 seed in the Olympic Games, all in pool play.  The last two Olympics required three sets, with the London (2012) match being the only set that the USA’s Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh Jennings lost during their three gold medal runs, 17-21, 21-8, 15-10 to Austrias Doris and Stephanie Schwaiger.  The match in Athens (2004) was a straight-set, 21-13 and 21-14 victory by the higher seed.
