Smith deals scoreless 9th in big league return

OAKLAND — A’s reliever Chris Smith returned to a Major League mound Sunday for the first time in six years, throwing a scoreless ninth inning in a 3-1 loss to the Cubs at the Coliseum.
Oakland purchased Smith’s contract from Triple-A Nashville Sunday and added him to the 25-man roster after placing Sonny Gray on the disabled list with right forearm tightness. A starter all season in Triple-A, the 35-year-old Smith will pitch out of the bullpen for the foreseeable future in Oakland, providing the A’s length as a long reliever while they piece together a rotation.
Smith allowed a one-out hit to Matt Szczur on Sunday, but he responded by striking out Dexter Fowler looking and getting Kris Bryant to line out to left to end the inning.
“It felt normal. I know it’s been, what, six years? But it felt normal,” Smith said with a chuckle.
