Forestieri winner downs Villa

Fernando Forestieri scored a late winner for Sheffield Wednesday as Roberto Di Matteo’s first game in charge of Aston Villa ended in a 1-0 defeat at Hillsborough.
A mistake by Villa goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini on his debut allowed Forestieri to slot home in the 85th minute for Carlos Carvalhal’s side.
Relegated in dismal fashion last season, Villa had been dominating before the winning goal, despite failing to create many real clear-cut chances.
For Wednesday, it was the perfect response in their opening game after suffering play-off final heartbreak last season.
It was an atmosphere of optimism from the off at Hillsborough, which the action on the pitch in the first half didn’t really live up to.
