England claimed six wickets during a heady afternoon session of the final day at Edgbaston to put themselves on course for a memorable victory. Pakistan lurched to tea on 148 for 7 as England’s quick bowlers produced magnificent displays of reverse swing, sending Pakistan tumbling from the relative comfort of 79 for 1.
Having been set 343 in 84 overs, Pakistan were steadily placed on 69 for 1 at lunch but it all changed when the ball started to move off straight for the pacemen although Moeen Ali, who settled for his best spell of the series, opened the door with the wicket of Azhar Ali. James Anderson’s classy six-over burst set the tone and he was followed up by Steven Finn, who ended his 412-ball wait for a wicket this series, and Chris Woakes. Misbah-ul-Haq’s departure began a collapse of 4 for 1 in 23 balls.
Sami Aslam made a 167-ball 70, his second impressive innings of the match, before shouldering arms at one from Finn which shaded back into him and clipped off stump. It was enough for Alastair Cook to ask for the session to be extended by 15 minutes to try and wrap up victory, but Yasir Shah and Mohammad Amir took Pakistan to the interval with a minimum 28 overs remaining in the day.
