A’s shuffle rotation as Overton goes to Minors

OAKLAND — The A’s optioned Dillon Overton to Triple-A Nashville on Saturday, recalling Patrick Schuster to take his place one day after Overton allowed seven runs in a loss to the Cubs. The move leaves Oakland with two open spots in the rotation behind Sonny Gray, Sean Manaea and Kendall Graveman.
The A’s haven’t determined replacements for Overton and starter Jesse Hahn, who was placed on the disabled list Friday with a strained right shoulder. Manager Bob Melvin said right-hander Zach Neal is an option if the team can avoid using him in long relief over the next three days, estimating Neal could throw as many as 80 pitches in a starting role.
“He’s pitched with a lot of confidence,” Melvin said. “His last two times out have been really good.”
Neal hasn’t allowed a run in three appearances since being recalled from Nashville on July 21. He’s made one start with the A’s this year, giving up seven runs in four innings on May 25 against the Mariners.
Melvin said righty Jharel Cotton, one of three players acquired from the Dodgers in exchange for Josh Reddick and Rich Hill, is a consideration.
