An intriguing fourth morning at Edgbaston brought a nip-and-tuck battle as Pakistan struck back by removing both England’s openers in quick succession and applying pressure to the middle order.
England resumed on 120 without loss but within five overs both Alastair Cook and Alex Hales had been removed with the lead just 23. Joe Root and James Vince then withstood Pakistan’s attempts to frustrate them, adding an unbroken 57 by the lunch break, to stretch England’s advantage to 80.
