One bad inning once again dooms Perez

HOUSTON — Rangers manager Jeff Banister said starter Martin Perez is “extremely close.”

But close wasn’t good enough against defending American League Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel, who threw a three-hit shutout in the Astros’ 5-0 victory over the Rangers on Friday night in the first of a three-game series at Minute Maid Park. The Astros cut the Rangers’ lead to 5 1/2 games in the American League West.

Perez took the loss, allowing five runs in seven innings, and is now 7-8 with a 4.33 ERA on the season. He is 0-4 with a 7.07 ERA in his last six starts and there is one common denominator in the four losses. In each of those starts, Perez had one inning where he gave up at least four runs, and that was the case on Friday night.

Perez gave up four runs in the third, and that was more than enough for Keuchel.
