Cardinals activate Carpenter from DL

ST. LOUIS — Matt Carpenter wrapped up a four-game rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield on Wednesday and was activated from the disabled list before Friday night’s game against the Braves, rejoining the Cardinals prior to the series opener at Busch Stadium.
To clear a spot on the 25-man roster for Carpenter, the Cardinals optioned left-handed reliever Dean Kiekhefer to Triple-A Memphis. With Kiekhefer’s departure, the Cardinals return to a seven-man bullpen.
Carpenter was activated from the DL 30 days after sustaining a right oblique strain on a third-inning swing against Pittsburgh’s Jeff Locke a day after being named a National League All-Star.
