Pakistan secured the psychological milestone of a three-figure lead on the third day at Edgbaston but England kept chipping away over the first two sessions to keep themselves just about in the contest.
Misbah-ul-Haq, who started the day at the crease following Azhar Ali’s last-ball dismissal yesterday, was the mainstay for Pakistan before dragging on against James Anderson for 56 while Sarfraz Ahmed, with a typically jaunty innings, added priceless runs as England worked their way through a flimsy lower order with the last five wickets falling for 42.
England’s seamers bowled well (Moeen Ali was only entrusted with two overs in the day) although James Anderson was ordered out of the attack after encroaching on the danger area for a third time – the second time in the year he had been removed having also transgressed in Johannesburg.
By then Pakistan were eight down so England were able to soak up Anderson’s absence although the last-wicket pair frustrated them for eight overs, which included Alastair Cook adding to Steven Finn’s woes when he spilled Rahat Ali at slip. Stuart Broad’s third wicket ended the innings on the stroke of tea, but with 44 overs still left in the day.
