Carpenter set to return from DL on Friday

CINCINNATI — Matt Carpenter wrapped up a four-game rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield on Wednesday and will meet the Cardinals back in St. Louis for Friday’s series opener against the Braves.
Carpenter will be activated from the disabled list 30 days after sustaining a right oblique strain on a third-inning swing against Pittsburgh’s Jeff Locke a day after being named a National League All-Star. His return will give the Cardinals a static leadoff hitter once again, and he’ll provide flexibility to play second and third for a team now without All-Star infielder Aledmys Diaz (fractured right thumb).
