A wicket fell from the first ball of the first innings of this Test. A wicket fell from the second ball of the second innings. Ten others fell throughout the opening day in Galle, where Mitchell Starc’s reverse swing was just as much of a weapon as the anticipated turn on a very dry pitch. But in amongst it all was some fine batting, first from Kusal Mendis, then as the shadows grew longer, from David Warner.
The upshot was that by stumps, Sri Lanka were in the stronger position, but Warner had at least given Australia a platform. Sri Lanka had been bowled out for 281 having chosen to bat, and Australia moved rapidly to 54 for 2 in reply.
