Cespedes heading to DL with quad injury

NEW YORK — Still unable to play the field due to a lingering right quadriceps injury, Yoenis Cespedes returned to the starting lineup Wednesday, going 1-for-5 as the designated hitter in the Mets’ 9-5 loss to the Yankees. However, after the game, manager Terry Collins said Cespedes will be placed on the disabled list. Cespedes said he aggravated the quad on his final at-bat of the game.
Cespedes was out of the starting lineup for nine of the Mets’ previous 20 games, dating back to the initial injury he suffered July 8 against the Nationals. Avoiding the disabled list had always been the Mets’ priority for Cespedes, despite Collins’ proclamation that he’s “not even close to 100 percent yet.”
