Mathis homers off former batterymate Lackey

CHICAGO — There wasn’t much waiting around when Jeff Mathis faced his former teammate, John Lackey, at Wrigley Field on Wednesday afternoon.
In three at-bats, Mathis saw just four pitches, but he made the most of the fourth one, as he lined it over the wall in left field in the seventh inning. At the time, the two-run homer put Miami in front, but the Cubs rallied with three in the ninth inning in the Marlins’ 5-4 walk-off loss for a three-game series sweep.
Mathis caught for the Angels from 2005-11, while Lackey was with the club from 2002-09.
“He’s a strike-thrower, looking to get ahead of you and put you away,” Mathis said. “I was looking for something early.”
