Sanchez gets chance to stay in rotation

DETROIT — Anibal Sanchez felt his six innings of one-run ball Tuesday was his best outing of the season. With Mike Pelfrey going on the disabled list, the timing couldn’t have been much better for him.
With Pelfrey sidelined by a lower back strain, the Tigers are going to give Sanchez an opportunity to build on what he felt was progress. He’s slated to start again Sunday against the Mets at Comerica Park.
Pelfrey’s DL stint is retroactive to Aug. 1, so he won’t be eligible to return until Aug. 16. That leaves at least one more turn to fill before he returns. Unless the Tigers were to bring back Daniel Norris from Triple-A Toledo, that slot, too, would presumably go to Sanchez next weekend at Texas.
It’s a chance for the Tigers to see if the improved command Sanchez showed Tuesday can carry over to the stretch run. Whether he stays in the rotation or not, that command is crucial for him.
