Reds gauging ‘right’ lineup fit for Schebler

CINCINNATI — Lou Piniella and Billy Hatcher were sitting on top of the bench in the Reds’ dugout Wednesday afternoon. It could have been a snapshot from 1990, when Piniella was the manager and Hatcher the center fielder for a Reds team that won the franchise’s fifth World Series title.
Instead, Piniella, now the Reds’ senior advisor to baseball operations, and Hatcher, the team’s third-base coach, were talking when Scott Schebler walked by.
“Nice hit, young man,” Piniella said, reaching out his hand toward Schebler to greet him.
Schebler is still trying to absorb the past couple of days — from the time he was called up from Triple-A Louisville to take the roster spot of Jay Bruce after Bruce was traded to the Mets, to when he hit a three-run, walk-off home run Tuesday night in a 7-5 win against the Cardinals.
