Sky Bet League Two 2016/17 guide
- Updated: August 3, 2016
The big kick-off is fast approaching but what will Sky Bet League Two serve up this season?
With the help of English Football League title sponsor, Sky Bet, and Sky Sports expert Ian Holloway, we pick out teams to watch at both ends of the table and players tipped to shine…
Title contenders
Portsmouth – beaten play-off semi-finalists last season – are Sky Bet’s 4/1 favourites for the title once again and are odds-on at 10/11 to make it out of League Two by any means come the end of the 2016/17 campaign.
Pompey boss Paul Cook, who guided previous side Chesterfield to the League Two title, has brought in a number of new faces including Danny Rose from Northampton Town, experienced goalkeeper David Forde and striker Curtis Main from Doncaster Rovers as they look to finally meet high expectations.
Doncaster – playing in the Championship only five years ago – slipped down into the fourth tier after a horrendous run at the end of the previous League One season, but Sky Bet make them the second-favourites at 11/8 to bounce back at the first attempt.
Darren Ferguson remains trusted with reversing their fortunes and has signed his former Peterborough player Tommy Rowe, as well as the likes of John Marquis – who helped Northampton to the League Two title last term on loan from Millwall – and former Leyton Orient captain Mathieu Baudry.
Luton and Leyton Orient missed out on the play-offs last term but both fancied to challenge after some canny signings and Sky Bet can’t split them at 2/1 to win promotion in a league likely to be fiercely competitive again.
The Hatters – 11th last season – have snapped up former Oxford duo Danny Hylton and Johnny Mullins, while Leyton Orient boss Andy Hessenthaler has signed nine this summer, including Jordan Bowery and Harry Cornick on loan from Bournemouth.
