Jacob deGrom shows Mets a glimpse of potential in victory

NEW YORK — The New York Mets and New York Yankees entered Tuesday’s Subway Series matchup with won-loss records only one game apart.
That seemed hard to fathom given their different approaches at Monday’s non-waiver trade deadline, with the Mets adding Jay Bruce and Jonathon Niese and the Yankees shipping out Andrew Miller, Carlos Beltran and Ivan Nova.
In a 7-1 win on Tuesday, the Mets (55-51) finally played the part of the team that’s still competitive in 2016.
Jacob deGrom (7-5) contributed a scoreless effort for the third time in his past four starts and maligned Alejandro De Aza opened the scoring with a two-run homer against Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka in the victory.

There were several positive developments Tuesday:
DeGrom limited the Yankees (53-53) to four hits in seven scoreless innings. He has a 1.55 ERA over his past seven starts. DeGrom tossed a one-hit shutout at Philadelphia on July 17. Then, after getting knocked out in the fourth inning at Miami, he tossed seven scoreless innings against the Rockies on Thursday. DeGrom even produced two hits on Tuesday. He said he finally is …
