No Smash Of Guitar For Cam McEvoy & Aussie Mates Ahead Of ‘Healthy Rivalry’ With USA

Give them their due: they tried really hard – but the hopes of Australia’s Channel Nine and a certain keeness to rescucitate the sprint saga of Sydney 2000 were smashed like guitars by a mild-mannered Cameron McEvoy and mates at the Australian swimming conference here in Rio today.

“So, has there been some trash-talking the Yanks,” ribbed the man from Nine with a nod to the arrival of the USA in the Olympic pool here in Rio today at the tail end of an Australian session.

They barely crossed each others paths but the USA Vs AUS battle (rest of world to fight, too) is in focus at an Olympic Games at which the No 1 superpower and the southern island nation that’s given it the bloodiest of noses down the years enter the fray with a thrillingly close count on the table topped “golden shots”.

If the media had it down as “two superpowers  sizing each other up already in the Athletes Village and across the pool deck”, McEvoy, Emily Seebohm, and Cate Campbell were having none of it. Seebohm smiled and noted:

“I briefly saw them this morning, they were warming up as I was swimming and by the time I was hopping out they were hopping in. So I didn’t really catch anyone but I’m sure I’ll see them at the pool. We’ve got to train at the same time.”
