Phillies answer Giants’ surge with big 8th in win

PHILADELPHIA — The retooled Giants bullpen, which allowed one run in nine innings during the club’s modest two-game winning streak, finally faltered Tuesday night as newcomer Will Smith and reliable standby Sergio Romo combined to yield five eighth-inning runs that propelled the Philadelphia Phillies to a 13-8 victory.
Aaron Altherr drove in five runs during an evening that included a two-run single in the eighth inning that broke an 8-8 tie, as well as a two-run, first-inning homer that helped Philadelphia grab a 6-0 lead against Giants ace Madison Bumgarner. Philadelphia’s top three hitters, Cesar Hernandez, Altherr and Maikel Franco, went a combined 11-for-14 with nine RBIs.
The Giants overcame that huge early deficit and led, 8-7, entering the bottom of the sixth. Brandon Crawford, San Francisco’s top run producer who didn’t start the previous two games due to a bruised left hand, resumed his season-long productivity in the fourth inning by delivering his 10th homer to open the Giants’ scoring. …
