Tilson’s big league debut ends in injury

DETROIT — Two days after being acquired by his hometown team, Wilmette, Ill., native Charlie Tilson was called up to the Majors for the first time. But the White Sox center fielder’s debut was short-lived, as Tilson departed with a left hamstring strain in the fifth inning against the Tigers at Comerica Park.

Tilson singled in his first career at-bat in the third inning and grounded out in the fourth. But in the fifth he was chasing down a fly ball off the bat of Miguel Cabrera in center field when he felt something in his left leg and fell to the ground.

White Sox manager Robin Ventura and trainer Herm Schneider rushed out and helped Tilson off the field after he stayed down for several minutes.

Tilson, a graduate of New Trier Township High School in Winnetka, north of Chicago, said before Tuesday’s game that he was ready to do something he has always dreamt of doing — play for his favorite childhood team.
