Newly acquired Tilson makes big league debut

DETROIT — Charlie Tilson quietly sat in a hotel bathroom in Round Rock, Texas, trying not to wake up his roommate and Memphis Redbirds teammate.

With a shaky voice, he called his parents to tell them not only had he been traded to his family’s beloved Chicago White Sox, but that he was going straight to the big leagues.

Tilson, a Wilmette, Ill., native and graduate of New Trier Township High School in Winnetka, north of Chicago, took that emotional moment a step further Tuesday when he made his Major League debut at Comerica Park. Tilson batted eighth and played center field for the White Sox.

“Something you think about your entire life,” said Tilson, who MLBPipeline.com rated the No. 5 White Sox prospect after the trade. “And to be able to come back home and play for the team that you rooted for growing up, it’s just one of those things that I feel so fortunate.”
