Mets call up Kelly, Edgin; Asdrubal to DL

NEW YORK — The trade acquisitions of Jay Bruce and Jonathon Niese represented only half of a clubhouse overhaul on Tuesday for a Mets team that turned over 16 percent of its roster.

In addition to welcoming Bruce and Niese, the Mets called up infielder Ty Kelly and left-handed reliever Josh Edgin from Triple-A Las Vegas. To make room, they placed shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and outfielder Justin Ruggiano on the 15-day disabled list, also optioning outfielder Brandon Nimmo and pitcher Seth Lugo to Las Vegas.

The most significant injury belongs to Cabrera, who needed to be helped off the field after straining the patella tendon in his left knee Sunday. But the Mets are optimistic that Cabrera’s injury is no more serious than when he suffered a similar one during Spring Training, missing two weeks. If that’s the case, he could come off the DL as soon as he’s eligible on Aug. 16.
