Each month, ESPN Stats & Information’s Home Run Tracker team takes a look at the most notable long-ball accomplishments in the major leagues.
Here’s our take on the best of July.
Longest home run of the month: Mark Reynolds
Mark Reynolds’ 486-foot blast against the Atlanta Braves on July 21 was the longest home run in July and the second-longest in the major leagues this season (behind Giancarlo Stanton’s 490-footer on May 6). It is also the longest home run Reynolds has hit since ESPN started tracking home runs in 2009.
ESPN Stats & Information
Not to be forgotten, Reynolds’ teammate Carlos Gonzalez hit a 475-foot home run off Hector Neris on July 10, which was the second-longest of the month. It also was the longest home run Gonzalez has hit since ESPN started tracking home run distances.
Hitter of the month: Trevor Story
Trevor Story finished July tied for second in the majors with eight home runs, while creeping up the all-time list of home runs by rookie shortstops.
Story ended July with 27 home runs, behind only Nomar Garciaparra in 1997 (30) for most home runs by a rookie shortstop.
ESPN Stats & Information
And Story’s home runs were not cheap. Six of Colorado’s 12 425-foot home runs this month came off his bat. His six 425-footers were more than 15 teams hit in July.
None of this should be surprising, however, as all eight of his July home runs came at Coors Field, which is known for yielding not only a high number of home runs, but also long ones. The Rockies’ home has allowed the most 425-foot home runs every season beginning in 2014; it was second to Rogers Centre in 2013.
Don’t sleep on Encarnacion’s power
Third in the major leagues with 28 home runs this season, the Blue Jays’ Edwin Encarnacion joined in on the long game as well. Encarnacion hit two 460-home runs in July and is the only hitter with two 460-footers in a month this season. He is also the only Blue Jays hitter in the last eight seasons with two such home runs in a …
