As pads come on, 49ers prepare for test of high-speed practices

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Rare is the rookie who enters his first NFL training camp with an advantage over his veteran teammates. But as the San Francisco 49ers prepare to practice with pads on for the first time at coach Chip Kelly’s hyper speed, defensive lineman DeForest Buckner brings a little bit of knowledge on the topic.
Buckner’s experience at Oregon, where he and Kelly overlapped for one season, served him well in his preparation for training camp and should do the same when the Niners take part in their first padded practice under Kelly on Tuesday.
“I’m used to the fast paced training that Chip does and everything,” Buckner said. “So I kind of know what to expect practice wise.”
The same is true for teammate and fellow former Duck Arik Armstead, but for the rest of the 49ers, business is really about to pick up. With competition at numerous positions across the depth chart, the battle for jobs truly begins when the pads come on. Practices that already tend to be pretty grueling because of the fast-paced tempo Kelly prefers will only yield more sweat with the additional weight of the pads.
A typical Kelly practice will last no longer than two hours but could be over as fast as 60 minutes. The first two workouts of this camp have clocked in at a little more than an hour and 40 minutes. During the workouts, players bounce between individual drills, 7-on-7 work and team drills with built-in teaching periods along the way. Instead of stopping practice when a player makes a mistake, Kelly keeps his foot on the gas and goes on to the next play. Any mistake will be addressed during the teaching period and likely again during film sessions.
“If you look at it, every one of our periods is followed by a teach period,” Kelly said. “So, it goes team-teach-team-teach-team-teach. So, it’s built into the practice schedule …
