Rangers make big moves, acquiring Lucroy, Beltran

ARLINGTON — The Rangers went into the midsummer trading season “focused” on pitching and came out of it with a much more powerful lineup.
Texas reinforced its offensive firepower by acquiring catcher Jonathan Lucroy from the Brewers and outfielder Carlos Beltran from the Yankees on Monday. The deals came down less than 90 minutes before the 3 p.m. CT non-waiver Trade Deadline.
The Rangers also acquired reliever Jeremy Jeffress from the Brewers, along with Lucroy, for Minor League outfielder Lewis Brinson, pitcher Luis Ortiz and a player to be named later.
The Rangers acquired Beltran from the Yankees for Minor League pitchers Dillon Tate, Nick Green and Erik Swanson. Texas also gets cash considerations in the deal.
Lucroy, 30, becomes the Rangers’ No. 1 catcher and is signed through 2017. A two-time All-Star, he is hitting .299 with 13 home runs, 50 RBIs and a .482 slugging percentage.
Jeffress was the Brewers’ closer this season, with 27 saves and a 2.22 ERA. He also has a 1.25 WHIP, with 7.1 strikeouts per nine innings.
Beltran will likely be the Rangers’ designated hitter going down the stretch, but he could also play outfield. He makes up for the …
