Rangers cap tough July with sweep of Royals
- Updated: July 31, 2016
ARLINGTON — July has been a tough stretch for the Rangers, but they finished the month on a high note by completing a four-game sweep of the Royals with a 5-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Globe Life Park.
Mitch Moreland and Nomar Mazara hit two-run homers off Royals starter Dillon Gee to help send Kansas City to its sixth straight loss and drop them 12 games back of the first-place Indians in the American League Central. The Rangers increased their lead in the AL West to six games over the Astros. They have won seven of their last nine, but still finished 11-15 in July — by far their worst month of the season.
Right-hander Lucas Harrell went six innings and gave up three runs on four hits to pick up the win in his Rangers debut. Solo home runs from Eric Hosmer and Drew Butera and an RBI single from Alcides Escobar comprised the damage against Harrell. Sam Dyson pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his 22nd save.
Gee’s struggles as a starter this season continued. He’s yielded 26 runs and given up seven homers through his six starts after giving up four in six innings to pick up the loss in the series finale.
