Diaz hit by pitch on right thumb, later exits

MIAMI — Cardinals shortstop Aledmys Diaz took a 95-mph pitch off his right thumb in his first at-bat on Sunday and did not return to play the field a half-inning later.

The Cardinals have not yet announced the seriousness of the injury, though Diaz appeared to have trouble flexing his thumb when prompted by a team athletic trainer. Diaz eventually trotted to first base, but after being erased on a subsequent double play, he exited the game.
