Lucroy declines trade to Cleveland

MILWAUKEE — An agreement between the Brewers and Indians that would have sent two-time All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy to the Indians for four prospects fell through on Sunday when Lucroy declined to waive his no-trade clause.

The Indians were one of eight clubs on Lucroy’s no-trade list. He asked Cleveland to eliminate the 2017 club option in his contract in exchange for accepting the deal, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

No further talks regarding Lucroy are expected, general manager David Stearns said.

The Indians, meanwhile, made another blockbuster trade, acquiring Yankees reliever Andrew Miller for multiple top prospects, though it appeared none overlapped with the Lucroy deal.

If it had gone through, the centerpiece of the prospect package coming to Milwaukee for Lucroy would have been catcher Francisco Mejia, a 20-year-old switch-hitter who is No. 6 on MLBPipeline.com’s list of the Indians’ top prospects, and would have changed organizations amid a 42-game hitting streak that spans two levels of Class A.
