NEW YORK — The Rockies and their fans can breathe a little easier as shortstop Trevor Story’s injury during Saturday’s 7-2 win over the Mets turned out to be just a jammed left thumb. It could have been worse.

Story, the National League record holder for home runs by a rookie shortstop with 27, actually hurt the thumb twice, in different ways, in the fourth inning.

Story jammed the thumb when he slid into second base in the top of the frame. On an infield single, he tried to take second on an errant throw from Mets shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, but was thrown out by first baseman Kelly Johnson. Story left the game after landing on it when he dove unsuccessfully for Justin Ruggiano’s one-out single in the fourth.
