The Rogers Cup in Toronto has come down to its last stages, and only four players are left in the tournament”s main draw. Four of them left – all eyeing the same – the Rogers Cup glory which would be very welcomed by all of them.
Stan Wawrinka (SUI) [2] – Kei Nishikori (JPN) [3] For the fifth time in their careers, the two top ten players are set to square off in a match which should determine the first finalist of the Rogers Cup. If we are to judge by the past, Wawrinka and Nishikori only met on the biggest events as three of their four matches played so far came at the Grand Slam or the Masters 1000 level – the only exception was ATP 250 event in Buenos Aires four years ago, in 2012. Overall head-to-head record is on Wawrinka”s side as the Swissman has three wins and one loss against the Japanese. When it comes to their performances this week in Toronto, both players managed to make a successful transition from grass to hard-courts – especially Wawrinka who hasn”t lost a set on his way to the Rogers Cup semi-final. After a good start to this season with capturing Chennai and Dubai titles, the 31-year-old Swissman has failed to put up good performances on a regular basis, and that unfortunately for him resulted with a couple of early losses and not satisfactory achievements. However, Wawrinka was able to win one more title this year – ATP 250 Geneva prior to the French Open. On the other side, after an injury scare which forced Nishikori to retire from his Round-16 Wimbledon match against Marin Cilic, the 6th-ranked player in the world has bounced back making the last four stage in Toronto and losing only one set on his route to that achievement – to Grigor Dimitrov in previous round. On a paper, this clash looks to be a tight one – which surely is, but the favourite to book his place in Toronto”s final can be picked – Stan Wawrinka.
