With a second hundred in three Tests against Zimbabwe for Ross Taylor, and BJ Watling five runs away from the same feat, New Zealand stretched their lead towards 400 in an unsuccessful second session for the hosts’ wearing attack. Apart from their removal of the nightwatchman Ish Sodhi in the second over of the day’s play, Zimbabwe, who were without Regis Chakabva and Sean Williams (both ill), toiled sans impact or inspiration as they watched the game slip away.
Taylor and Watling shared a sixth-wicket stand of 220, scored freely and accelerated a run rate that had laboured at around two-and-half throughout the match. They offered no chances, dealt particularly well with the short balls and scored with pulls and the square cuts, testing Zimbabwe’s fatigued fielders, who spent 162 overs under the Bulawayo sun.
