Vogelsong could be one start from Bucs return

MILWAUKEE — Ryan Vogelsong’s pain in the neck may have been a blessing in disguise.
Vogelsong was eligible to return from the 60-day disabled list on Saturday, but he left his July 20 rehab start after four innings due to neck stiffness — an inconveniently timed injury caused by hotel beds, long flights and an aggressive swing or two.
So Vogelsong made another rehab start for Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday and pitched well, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two.
“The other day was definitely much better than the one before that,” Vogelsong said. “I don’t know if most of that was my neck, but I’m glad I made another one. I felt a lot better about the way I felt physically. … It put me in a better mind frame about being ready.”
Vogelsong threw 83 pitches over seven innings on Wednesday, perhaps an indication that he will start for the Pirates whenever he’s activated.
