A round-up of the rest of the action from Goodwood as Final Reckoning won for Charlie Appleby.

Final Reckoning held off a host of late challengers to give Charlie Appleby his first winner at this year’s Qatar Goodwood Festival in the Betfred Supports Jack Berry House Nursery.

Always close to the action on the far side, the 9-2 favourite was sent on to win his race over a furlong out under James McDonald in his bid to follow up his maiden success gained at Yarmouth on his last start.

After mastering the prominently-ridden Dusker, the son of Dark Angel was faced with having to repel another Mark Johnston-trained runner as Rusumaat as the line approached.

Despite the best efforts of Rusumaat it was not enough with the Newmarket handler’s charge holding on in game fashion to claim victory by a neck and give his successful rider a third winner at the meeting.

Appleby said: “It is nice to get one on the board. I’ve been pleased with the way the two-year-olds have been running. We’ve hit the bar a few times, but James McDonald gave him a great ride.

“He has progressed and he won his maiden nicely. It was not a very good race, but he could do no more than win the way he did.

“We gave him a break and he went into the race in good order. Getting back to a sounder surface has helped and James said about bringing him back to five.”

Although the two-year-old holds an entry in next month’s Gimcrack at York, an outing in the Group Two prize looks unlikely.
