New Gene Doping Test Will Be Used To Test Rio 2016 Samples After WADA Approval

The International Olympic Committee will not trigger a new gene doping test until after the Rio 2016 Olympic Games but will use the breakthrough to back-test samples from the showcase event in Brazil if and when the new procedure is authorised by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
The IOC’s medical and scientific director Dr. Richard Budgett told The Associated Press that the new test – developed in Australia to identify if an athlete is artificially adjusting their DNA to enhance performance – will be included in one of the next tranches of testing stored samples.
Backdated testing of samples from Beijing 2008 and London 2012 has caught a wave of athletes out, among them medal winners, the IOC able to re-test doping samples up to 10 years after an Olympics and extending the fight to the future and technology …
