Australia will need to chase down 268 to win the first Test in Pallekele after Sri Lanka’s tail frustrated them with a series of handy partnerships on the fourth day. The third-day hero Kusal Mendis fell for 176 during a severely rain-curtailed opening session but Australia were unable to run quickly through the rest of the order, with Rangana Herath (35) leading an important lower-order display.
